Demo real accounts on support calls without exposing customer data
Support, success and sales teams: walk customers through real accounts and admin tools while other customers’ names, emails and payment details stay blurred.
Updated
The fastest way to solve a support issue is often to share your screen and show the customer exactly where to click. The problem is what else is on that screen. Admin panels list every customer, help desks show other people’s tickets, and billing tools show names, emails and card details.
Sales demos have the same problem in reverse. A demo environment is rarely as convincing as the real product, but the real product is full of real customer data.
Common exposures on support and demo calls
- Customer lists and search results in admin panels and CRMs.
- Ticket queues in Zendesk, Intercom, Freshdesk or Help Scout, showing other customers’ names and subjects.
- Billing pages in Stripe or your own back office, with emails, amounts and card digits.
- Internal notes that were never meant for a customer to read.
Showing one customer another customer’s personal data is a privacy incident, not just an awkward moment. Depending on where you operate, it can count as a reportable data breach.
A support-safe screen share in five steps
- Open the tool you’ll show and click the BlurSite icon.
- Run Smart Scan to find and blur emails, card numbers and API keys on the page in one click.
- Click to blur anything else that belongs to other customers: list rows, ticket subjects, names. Use area blur for a whole panel.
- Turn on keep blur for pages you show often, such as the customer list or ticket queue, so they’re safe by default on the next call.
- If something unexpected appears, press ⌥⇧H for the privacy curtain to cover the whole page instantly.
What to blur first
If you only have a minute before the call, cover the things that identify a person: names, email addresses, phone numbers and payment details. Then cover anything commercially sensitive, such as other customers’ plan names, order values or internal notes. Layout, buttons and labels can stay visible, since that’s what the customer needs to see to follow along.
For the customer you are helping, ask whether they’re comfortable with their own details on screen, especially if colleagues have joined the call.
For sales engineers
A live production account with blurred customer details usually makes a stronger demo than an empty sandbox: real volumes, real workflows, real edge cases. Blur the names and amounts, keep the shape of the data, and demo the product people will actually use.
Rolling it out to a team
- The Startup plan covers 10 active browsers, enough for a small support or success team on one license.
- Agree on a short list of pages everyone blurs before sharing: the customer list, the ticket queue and billing.
- Add “blur before you share” to your call checklist next to “close other tabs”.
Setting up for the first time? The installation guide takes about two minutes.
Frequently asked questions
- Does BlurSite send customer data anywhere?
- No. The pages you visit and blur never leave your browser. See the privacy policy for exactly what the extension sends.
- Will the blur show up in Zoom, Meet and Teams?
- Yes. BlurSite blurs the webpage itself, so any screen-sharing tool shows the blurred version.
- Can our whole support team use one license?
- The Startup plan covers up to 10 active browsers. For larger teams, contact us.
