You don’t need to download an editor to blur an image. These browser-based tools handle everything from a quick background blur to precise redaction, and the last one blurs live web pages rather than image files.
Which one should you use?
- Blur just one area precisely (a face, text, a number plate): Photopea.
- Blur a whole photo for a background or social post: Adobe Express.
- Paint blur onto part of an image in a design: Canva.
- Blur a web page before screen sharing or recording: BlurSite.
1. Photopea: most precise
Photopea is a free, ad-supported editor that runs in the browser and works much like Photoshop. To blur one area, draw a selection over it with the Rectangle or Lasso select tool, then choose Filter → Blur → Gaussian Blur and set the radius.
It also has a Blur Gallery with Field, Iris, Tilt-Shift, Path and Spin blur for creative effects, according to Photopea’s documentation. There’s a learning curve, but nothing else here’s as precise.
2. Adobe Express: simplest whole-image blur
The free plan of Adobe Express includes a blur slider. Upload a photo, select it, open Adjustments, and drag Blur. Adobe notes that this effect applies to the whole image. For a sharp subject on a blurred background, use its separate Blur Background effect.
3. Canva: brush blur inside your designs
Canva’s Blur tool (Edit → Tools → Blur) can blur the whole photo or only the areas you paint over with a brush. It’s handy when the image is already part of a Canva design. Full steps are in How to Blur an Image in Canva.
4. BlurSite: blur live web pages
The tools above edit image files. If what you need to hide is on a website you’re about to screen share, record or screenshot, like a dashboard, an inbox or a CRM, BlurSite blurs it directly on the page. Click an element or drag over an area, and the blur shows in Zoom, Meet, Loom and every screenshot. It’s a browser extension with a 7-day free trial.
Before you share a blurred image
- For sensitive text, use a strong blur or a solid box. Light blur can sometimes be reversed.
- Export as PNG or JPG so the blur is flattened into the image.
- Double-check the edges of the image for the same information in another place, like a tab title or a reflection.
