How to Blur Faces in a Video for Free (4 Tools, 2026)

Blur faces, number plates and screens in a video without paying: YouTube Studio, DaVinci Resolve, Shotcut and CapCut compared, with steps for each.

A stranger walks through your vlog. A parent asks you to hide their kid in the school concert video. A customer wanders into the background of a product shoot. Blurring a face is a small job, and you don’t need paid software for it. These four free tools cover almost every case, from one-click face detection to frame-by-frame control.

Quick comparison

  • YouTube Studio: automatic face blur for videos already on YouTube. Best when YouTube is where the video lives.
  • DaVinci Resolve (free version): professional tracking and blur. Best for full control, but has a learning curve.
  • Shotcut: free and open source on Windows, Mac and Linux. Best for simple, static blurs.
  • CapCut: built-in face blur effect and mask tracking on phone and desktop. Best for quick social clips.

1. YouTube Studio: automatic face blur

If your video is on YouTube, the built-in editor can find faces for you. According to YouTube Help, you open YouTube Studio on a computer, go to Content, pick the video, open Editor, then choose Blur → Face blur. Once processing finishes, select the faces to blur and click Apply.

For anything that isn’t a face, like a licence plate, a document or a laptop screen, use Blur → Custom blur and draw a box. You can set it to Track object so the blur follows movement, or Fix blur position so it stays put. Rectangle and oval shapes are available, and you can choose when each blur starts and ends on the timeline.

Limitation: YouTube notes that for unedited videos with more than 100,000 views, you may not be able to save changes other than face blur (channels in the YouTube Partner Program are exempt). The blur also only applies to the YouTube copy, not your original file.

2. DaVinci Resolve: the most control

The free version of DaVinci Resolve can track and blur a moving face. The usual workflow is:

  1. Open the Color page and add a new node for the blur.
  2. Draw a soft circular Power Window around the face.
  3. Open the Tracker and track the window forwards and backwards through the clip.
  4. Drag a blur effect (for example Mosaic Blur from Resolve FX Blur) onto that node, or raise the blur radius.

The tracker handles most head movement, but check the result frame by frame around fast turns or when someone walks behind an object.

3. Shotcut: free and open source

Shotcut is a free, open-source editor for Windows, Mac and Linux. It has several blur filters (Box, Gaussian and others) and mask filters such as Mask: Simple Shape. Put a shape mask over the face, apply a blur filter inside it, and use keyframes to move the mask if the person moves.

Shotcut doesn’t detect faces automatically. It’s ideal when the subject stays mostly still, like a seated interview, and slower for footage with a lot of movement.

4. CapCut: fastest for short clips

CapCut includes a face blur effect and a mask Track option that follows a moving subject, on both phone and desktop. It’s the quickest route for a short social clip. Features have moved between CapCut’s free and Pro tiers several times, so look for the Pro badge before you start a long project.

Blurring a screen recording instead?

If the thing you need to hide is an email, a password or a dashboard in a screen recording, you can skip editing entirely. Blur it in the browser before you hit record. Read Blur Before You Record for the workflow.

Tips for a blur that actually hides someone

  • Cover the whole head, including hair and ears, not just the face. People are recognisable from much less than you expect.
  • Use a strong blur or pixelation. A light blur can still reveal who someone is.
  • Remember voices, name tags, and reflections in windows or glasses.
  • Scrub through the final export frame by frame around fast movement, where tracking tends to slip.
