How to Screen Share WhatsApp Web Without Showing Your Chats

Need to show one WhatsApp conversation on a call? Keep your chat list, contacts and message previews private with a few simple steps.

Support teams, community managers and small business owners often need to show a WhatsApp conversation on a call, maybe to walk a colleague through a customer issue or to demo an order flow. The trouble is that WhatsApp Web shows your whole chat list next to the conversation: names, profile photos, and the latest message from everyone.

What’s visible by default

  • The chat list on the left, with contact names and message previews.
  • Profile pictures of everyone in that list.
  • The phone numbers of people who aren’t saved as contacts.
  • Pop-up notifications for new messages while you share.

Blur the sidebar, keep the conversation

  1. Open web.whatsapp.com and open the chat you want to show.
  2. Click the BlurSite icon, then click the chat list panel to blur the whole sidebar in one go.
  3. In the open conversation, blur any individual messages, numbers or attachments that should stay private.
  4. Turn on Keep if you do this often, so the sidebar is blurred every time you open WhatsApp Web.
  5. Share the browser tab (not your whole screen) in Zoom, Meet or Teams.

A few more precautions

  • Don’t open other chats while sharing. Switching chats briefly shows the new conversation before you can blur it.
  • Clear the search box in the sidebar before sharing, since past searches may appear.
  • Consider a separate WhatsApp Business number for demos so that personal contacts never appear.

The same approach works for Slack, Gmail, Intercom and any other web app with a sidebar full of names. See the use cases for more.
